The use of flaxseed oil in eczema treatment is recommended for those who prefer natural remedies. If you suffer from eczema, then red, inflamed and itchy skin becomes your daily nuisance. The reasons for eczema are numerous and there’s no uniform cure for eczema. Several treatments are known and flaxseed oil is a natural remedy to provide relief.

Researches

The “British Journal of Nutrition” published a 2007 study where the benefits of flaxseed and borage oils for women’s skin conditions were assessed for 12 weeks. There were three groups of women, including a placebo group. Women taking borage and flaxseed oils showed less skin redness and roughness, which proves the possible positive effect of flaxseed oil in eczema treatment.

The influence of flaxseed oil to eczema

Alpha-linolenic acid and linolenic acid are building blocks for a number of lipids called eicosanoids that control inflammation in the body. The ω-3 eicosanoids derived from omega-3 fatty acids act as anti-inflammatory.

The increase in ALA consumption may lead to the larger amount of eicosapentaenoic acid EPA and docosahexaenoic acids DHA, though the body’s ability to convert ALA into DHA and EPA is still studied. The University of Maryland Medical Center states that EPA and DHA are able to lessen inflammation.

Moreover, flaxseed components can block the activity of interleukin-1 beta and TNF-alpha agents that are pro-inflammatory.

Caution

Flaxseed oil can have side effects. People usually tolerate flaxseed oil well although flaxseed oil may interact with blood thinning and diabetic medications as well as with oral contraceptives. People allergic to the Linaceae family plants should avoid flaxseed oil. Those with diabetes or schizophrenia have problems with converting EPA and DHA acid from alpha-linolenic acid. They won’t get benefits of flaxseed oil and should replace it with fish oil, for example. (Read the comparison of flaxseed oil vs fish oil).

Anyway talk to your doctor to find out if it is beneficial for you to use flaxseed oil for eczema treatment. Remember that flaxseed oil cannot be used instead of medications prescribed for eczema treatment.
